The horse, one of the most
sensitive and reliable animals,
establishes a relationship with
man which is difficult to
explain… it has to be
experienced!
But how do you communicate
with a horse?
Throughout the centuries various
communication techniques have
developed, but, apart from the
additional aids used to control
it while riding (such as reining,
shifting the weight, pressing
with the legs), talking,
stroking and titbits are the
best methods.
|
|
| |
In order to train a horse the
additional aids have to be used
properly and responsibly. A
light tap with the heel on its
side is suitable when necessary,
whereas the use of either a
sharp bit that can hurt its
delicate mouth or cutting spurs
is forbidden if you don’t want
to come across unpleasant risks!
Horses express themselves
very clearly. If they show
the whites of their eyes or
lower their ears they’re in a
bad mood, whereas if they graze
peacefully they can be
approached without any danger.
The ears position and the
movements are very clear signals
of the animal’s mood even while
you’re riding.
Expert owners know how to
recognise these signals and
are able to easily establish
weather a horse is calm, nervous,
dangerous or relaxed.
In order to establish a healthy
and longlasting relationship
with a horse it’s necessary to
understand what can be expected
from it by learning its natural
needs.

The wobbler syndrome
and the leaning tic are
called, in equestrian
and veterinarian jargon,
stereotyped behaviours:
a repetitive behaviour
that isolates the horse
from reality.
They’re serious nervous
tics caused by lifestyle,
such as a forced
inactivity, no company,
it must be remembered
that horses are animals
that enjoy socializing,
or a long stay in the
stables.

|
|
| |
The wobbler syndrome is a
longlasting problem, spurred
by lack of movement and boredom,
that can gradually cause a
wearing of the tendons and the
joints. Therefore it’s necessary
to entertain the horse by making
it move a lot, eat little and
often throughout the day and
also letting it graze with other
animals, such as ponies or goats.
On the other hand the leaning
tic is caused by the early
wearing of the front teeth and
by digestive problems, even
acute colics, worsened by
continuous air ingestion. In
order to avoid this problem you
must make the horse move as much
as possible not allowing it any
chance of leaning anywhere in
the stables by painting with
suitable products sharp corners,
supports and any other surface
in order to keep it away.
You must also use a collar
reinforced with steel that must
be removed only when the horse
eats. Anyway the only actual
solution for this problem is an
operation by an expert vet.

It’s possible to notice horses with glazed eyes, an illness identified with the moon both because the eyes become translucid looking like the full moon and because the illness appears regularly: the animal is in low spirits, has a fever and loses its appetite. In between painful fits, the horse’s eyes show a severe vascularization of the cornea that causes it to glaze, the thickening of the iris and finally the retina’s damaging.
This illness’s causes are not still certain and it’s usually treated by administering cortisone-based medicines.
